The Valley is pleased to present new works by Amelia Lockwood and Noah Schneiderman at Art Athina, taking place from September 16-19 at the Zappeion Mansion in Athens, Greece. This will be the gallery’s and both artists’ first international art fair.

Amelia Lockwood’s sculptures were made this summer while living and working in Athens in a residency sponsored by The Valley at Sealed Earth Ceramic Studio. Utilizing local stoneware clay and materials, the works were inspired by Cycladic art and design and the architectural character of Athens. This presentation features a range of vessels and “labras” aswirl with celestial imagery, flashes of soda ash, and dark oxidized accents. Noah Schneiderman’s paintings utilize his experience with natural dye techniques to create canvases that are colored with iron, cutch, indigo, madder root, and marigold as bases for his paintings. Working from dyed canvas allows him to begin with an automatic drawing, looking for imagery to come forward from the dyed surface and reveal itself. Expanding on the body of work in his recent solo exhibition at The Valley, these paintings feature folkloric figures, ethereal marks, and richly textural surfaces. Lockwood and Schneiderman both prioritize an intuitive way of working, privileging the guidance imbued in the materials they work with. Their pairing in this presentation highlights a shared appreciation for the alchemy of working with materials derived from the earth, plant matter, and mineral compounds.
