SOLAR RETURN
NADA Miami
December 1-4, 2021

Aron John Dubois & Amelia Lockwood

The Valley is thrilled to announce our participation in the 19th edition of NADA Miami, taking place from December 1-4, 2021 at Ice Palace Studios. Shortly after the one year anniversary of the gallery’s opening in Taos, we will present SOLAR RETURN, a two-person booth featuring new works by Aron John Dubois and Amelia Lockwood. Both artists prioritize intuition in their practice, allowing forms to come forward from a primal and subconscious vocabulary of symbols, energy, and motion. This intuitive work is often surprising, raw, and sometimes hostile, swirling with mysteries cosmic and terrestrial. Together, Dubois’ works on paper and Lockwood’s ceramic sculptures give viewers a sense of tuning in with an esoteric mode of communication between human beings and our energetic surroundings in the natural world.

Aron John Dubois (b.1989, Boulder, CO) is a painter and an internationally recognized tattoo artist based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. With no formal arts education after high school, Dubois has honed his craft in tattooing, painting, ceramics, and other media by meticulous study and self-directed practice. His work predominantly addresses the enigma of nature, corporeality, and archetypal drama through a lens influenced by art brut, folk mysticism, anthropology, and the grotesque. Working primarily on paper media with layered watercolor, ink, and gouache, he creates earthly altar-like compositions decorated with a symbolic language born of his own mythology and spiritual inquiry. His first ever solo exhibition was held in August 2021 at The Valley.

Amelia Lockwood (b. 1990, Stroudsburg, PA) is a Los Angeles based artist whose practice privileges gestural language to produce objects that are reflections of our energetic surroundings. Lockwood received her BFA from Syracuse University (2012), completed post-bac studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder (2016), and received her MFA from The University of California, Los Angeles (2020). Selected exhibitions include Maia’s Pool, Various Small Fires, James Wright Gallery, In Lieu, One Trick Pony, Five Car Garage Gallery and Odd Ark. Her recent solo exhibition at The Valley presented a series of ceramic works made from clay harvested and fired in the mountains of western Georgia in the village of Mtispiri.
